Man kills girlfriend and Arlington police officer

ARLINGTON - Three people were found shot to death three days after Christmas when a domestic violence call turned into a homicide/suicide in Arlington, Texas.

Barnes Nettles (shown) 38,  killed his ex-girlfriend, Kimberly Carter, 29, and Arlington police officer Jillian Michelle Smith, 24, before turning the gun on himself committing suicide.
Officer Smith was killed protecting the life of a 11-year-old child as Nettles started gunfire.  Smith was the only officer on the scene at the time of the incident.

Prior to the killings on December 28, Barnes had prior incidents with the ex-girlfriend Carter's family.  He was arrested in Arlington on two warrants for allegedly assaulting Carter's sister and mother in September 2010.


Jillian Michelle Smith, 24, was the Arlington police officer who responded to the 911 call made by Kimberly Carter that night. Officer Smith was shoot and killed by Barnes Nettles while protecting Carter's 11-year-old child. Officer Smith stepped in front of the child as the gun was fired.
